The Collapsing DoD’s Numbers Game
The truth of US losses in Iraq
March 2, 2007
by Ali Hussein Bakeer
Since the beginning of the US war against Iraq, the figures of the human losses of the Americans, Iraqis or coalition forces were the subject of a controversy because of its relation to politics and public opinion from one side, and the moral and readiness of US soldiers in Iraq from the other side. This paper is promised to analyze the data provided by all the sources in order to conclude a correct evaluation of the figure of dead Americans in Iraq.
Official figures
September 2006 knew the greatest number of losses in the rows of US troops in Iraq, in the last two years. According to the Pentagon, 70 were dead and 776 wounded. While “global security” website, estimated the number of wounded to be 900 during that same month. These numbers according to the Pentagon are the highest since the attack on Falloujah in November 2004, in which 1429 of US troops were wounded and 140 died.
The new surprise is that in October 2006 there was a renewal of violence and actions of resistance which made it the toughest months for the US troops. In October 23 the number of dead soldiers had reached 86. Which increased the number of dead during the first 9 months of 2006 to 620, and the total figure increased to 2790, since 2003, this data is according to official US sources.
According to many Arab and foreign observers, including Western study centers and observations and news web sites, though raised, do not correspond to reality.
We recently learned, according to Lancet’s study, that the number of Iraqi civilians who died since the US invasion in 2003 was 655,000. This figure is 3 to 5 times higher than the figures of the most known estimates. But it is 13 times higher than the estimates of “Iraq Body Count” program, and undoubtedly even larger than the US official estimates (23 times more) which claim that the number of Iraqi deaths was 30,000. It is obvious under these conditions, that the official number of dead itself is also unrealistic and untrue.
Estimates of the independent foreign sources
According to TBRnews (http://www.tbrnews.org), which counts the number of dead and wounded US troops in Iraq periodically and produces a regularly updated bulletin, the number of soldiers killed in Iraq on 23/10/06, exceeds 15,000 and that of casualties exceeds 27,000.
The site published on 23/10/06, an article entitled “The war of the republicans: Thank you George!” which mentions: the exact number of soldiers dead in Iraq until October 19, 2006 which currently exceeds 15,000 and increases unceasingly, like that of the casualties, which reached 27,000 and does not cease increasing.
This site referred to the operation carried out by resistance against the Falcon base, to the south of Baghdad in the night of October 10, 2006 in which more than 300 soldiers were dead or wounded. The losses were not listed officially. Let us recall that this base shelters nearly 5,000 US soldiers, but the official sources did not admit those numbers and said that only 100 soldiers were in the base.
And on the basis of article published on the same site by Brian Harring, there would be a strong presumption, that the Pentagon purposely didn’t publish the correct figures of US soldier losses. Harring announced that he had the chance to receive copies of lists drawn up by the unit of air transport for the number of US soldiers actually transported to the Dover base. These lists have shown that the number of transported soldiers is definitely higher than that published by the Pentagon.
The author, who is an analyst and correspondent in military matters and intelligence, affirms to have an official document; published and quickly withdrawn by Pentagon, which confirms that the number of US troops died in Iraq had reached the 10,000 during the period from March 2003 to July 2005. (This document is available on here)
Harring concludes that if account is held that the official document had recognized the existence of 15,000 severely wounded persons in addition to 25,000 light casualties, the official version that the number of US troops died does not exceed 3,000, would be completely unrealistic, however the situation is not limited to that, since the report mentions that not less than 5,500 US soldiers escaped to Canada, Ireland and other European countries.
In an article entitled “How many Americans really died in Iraq?” published on October 11, 2006, Tribor Charm written: “The US administration undoubtedly lies in the figures of dead in Iraq”, adding that he had read reports ensuring that the numbers of Americans died exceeded 10,000, and those according to him have a great credibility, especially by taking into account the recent revelation made by the association of ex-combatants in Vietnam, that the number of Americans died in Vietnam could be 20,000 higher than the officially admitted figure, that is to say 78,000 instead of 58,182.
Figures of the groups of resistance
It is known that the groups of resistance have greater capacity of counting the operations on the ground and the human and material losses which they subjected to the enemy. The difficulty which arises here is that the number of groups and consequently their official statements are large. Also a great number of groups undertake their actions on the ground without any coordination and sometimes even without publishing official statements relating to their actions.
Still one can estimate the losses caused by these groups in the rows of occupying forces, based on the official statements of each one of them.
The Islamic Army in Iraq is regarded as being one the most important group of resistance. It is also the most structured, best organized, more disciplined and also most precise in its statistics. The Islamic Army preserved a great regularity in its operations and proceeds like the other groups to film its brightest operations.
In an interview with an online magazine (Al Fursan) which is one of the Islamic Army publications, its commander in chief declared: “We killed thousands of soldiers and officers from different ranks and wounded much more. According to our statistics, the American losses exceeded 25,000 and the casualties are a few tens of thousands”.
The figure of 25,000 dead is close to the estimation of a Russian military expert who said “
